Project Description:
While at Oduworo Village we were particularly touched when a man representing the elderly spoke about being a burden on the village by not being able to contribute to village life. If they had bee hives they could make an income that would help the village and they would no longer be a burden.
We checked into the bee hive and honey market in Uganda and were very pleased with the results. Current prices for honey in Uganda are 2,000 Uganda shillings per liter. If an elder had 3 hives he would harvest about 30 liters every 6 months and make about 60,000 Uganda Shillings (about $36.50 US) for that effort. The Villagers will be trained in bee keeping by the Uganda Change Agent who lives in the village. He will be trained by the Uganda Bee Keepers Association for a modest fee and will help with the sales of the honey.
This is a great project that is easy for a Rotary Club, Interact Club, or an individual to become involved in. A donation of $50.00 will buy one bee hive that will help the elderly of Oduworo village contribute to village life. For each bee hive purchased you will receive a special gift of a bee hive rotary pin shown above. It’s our gift to you for helping those in great need.
