Project Description:
The Kohima Orphanage is located on the outskirts of Kohima, India. The Orphanage is currently home to 68 orphans; the youngest one is shown in the above picture with Rotarians Mark Morgan and Larry Potter both from the Murrieta Rotary Club. This picture was taken in February 2007. Since that date Mark Morgan and his family have sponsored ‘Acenio’, the little girl in the picture.
The orphanage is run by Mother Zaputuou, 86 years old. She has been doing this for over 35 years. In Nagaland, orphans have no value, therefore Mother Zaputuou waits three months after the children are left with her and if no one comes for the child she adopts them and gives them her name, thus a chance at a productive life.
The living conditions at the orphanage are good, all things considered in India. The children are fed rice twice a day. On special occasions the Rotary Club of Kohima will come with meat for a special meal for the children and spend time with them. Their dorm rooms have open windows and doors and each child shares a bed.
The $200 you contribute will provide good food consisting of meat, vegetables, and starches every day. There will be money left for them to go to school. Mother ---- has made arrangements with the government for a teacher to come and teach those children level 4 and below. Once a child reaches level 5 schooling they must go to schools away from the orphanage, usually to a school associated with a church.
At the current time we have children available for sponsorship. We will provide you with a picture of the child and a brief statement about the child.
